Insulin resistance and Pregnancy

Insulin resistance and Pregnancy

Conception is not just the sperm meeting an egg but in high insight everything in the female body should be normal and optimum at a hormonal level for the process to even begin. These not only involves the fertility hormones but other hormones as well which can affect fertility indirectly. For a moment, let’s imagine your hormonal system as an intricate series of scales. In order for everything to remain in balance, each of those hormones needs to maintain a level existence – never falling outside a pre-determined ideal. When just one of those hormones increases or decreases below that ideal, each arm of the scale tips in reaction – the entire system falling out of balance.

Insulin is one of the hormones vital to that scale system, produced by the Beta cells in the pancreas and working to help the body process glucose into energy. With time, and a variety of medical conditions for e.g. Polycystic Ovaries, Diabetes etc the body can become resistant to insulin.

When that happens, the pancreas works to overcompensate – striving to produce enough insulin to continue converting that glucose as necessary. Unfortunately, that influx of insulin throws the entire scale system off, even as blood sugar levels begin to rise. The excess insulin eventually leads to an increase in testosterone levels as the body strives to right itself, and the resulting testosterone can inhibit fertility and completely halt ovulation.

There are several other hormones that are equally impacted when insulin levels rise. Follicle Stimulating Hormones (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormones (LH) cease being emitted at optimal levels, and follicular development is hindered as a result. Estrogen and progesterone fall equally out of balance. When ovulation does occur, egg quality is frequently low, further inhibiting the possibility of conception.

There are other issues which can lead to insulin resistance as well. With age, it is common for insulin resistance to become more of an issue for both men and women. Overeating, consuming junk food and avoiding exercise can all contribute to further increasing the problem. Those high insulin levels are then responsible for throwing off the entire hormonal system, making it much more difficult to rebalance the scales.

So an imbalance of just one hormone can cause a havoc on the body and not many people realise it. Insulin resistance one hundred percent affects fertility, and this sometimes can be a cause of unexplained fertility. The only problem is how will you know you have it? By the time you go and get your blood tested to see if you have sugar in your blood it will be too late, and you won’t be able to reverse it then!

If you are still wondering how to know if you have it or not, you can come to us. Our initial health assessment is unique and very detailed which gives you all the information you need to know about insulin resistance. This health assessment comprises of two parts; one which will tell how good or bad your insulin resistance is, and the second part will help us determine if this is a hormonal issue or a pathogenic invasion. Pathogens in your body can also have a knock-on effect on the Beta cells of the pancreas so if you remove the dysfunction, you can help the pancreas come back to normality! Once we know the exact cause, we will be able to advise you on how to reverse it with lifestyle modification and our in house treatments.

Insulin resistance does not only affect fertility, but it is one of the first step to develop Diabetes. If you have a family history of Diabetes Mellitus, you might be suffering from this and you might not even know it because it is completely symptomless! What you do today can affect your future and like I always say prevention is better than cure so some change today will help you immensely in your future!

OUR VALUES

Everything we do, we believe in supporting the body in its innate wisdom to heal itself to homeostasis. We believe in thinking differently and seeing the body as a whole. Our philosophy is similar to traditional medicine as we treat the root cause. We remove the dysfunctions and then stimulate the body’s own self healing, self regulating mechanisms more specifically by triggering those mechanisms using technologies. This way gives fast results. The way we challenge the status quo is by seeking out leading edge medical technologies for both health assessment and for natural treatments. The future of health technologies are here today.
